INTERLUDE: At the Gold Dragon Inn

By the 19th of Thaumont, Kon’s wounds had more or less healed. At least enough that he felt he should start figuring out what were his next steps.

He still had a fair bit of money left. He had suspicions about how Corwyn had come by so much more gold than the rest of them, but he dismissed the thoughts as disrespectful to the dead. He still had the mule, and some of the others’ gear in addition to his own, but he had no plan.

Kon had always known he wasn’t a great thinker. It wasn’t that he couldn’t understand things, or reason them out. It was just that he had no patience study. He grew bored trying to focus his attention for too long on things that didn’t seem to matter outside of a book. As a result, he was remarkably ill-suited to the task he had set himself.

As he sat in the taproom of the Gold Dragon Inn, he wondered if he should try to gather a new group of party members. “No.” he mumbled to himself, “They’d expect me to have a plan. That’s the whole trouble.”

“What’s that, son?” The innkeeper asked, passing by with an empty tray.

Kon looked up. “Sorry.” he said, “Just thinking out loud.”

The innkeeper nodded, “Fair enough. Another round?”

“Yeah.”

When the innkeeper returned with a fresh mug, he said, “Seems like something pressing on you, lad.”

Kon looked up. “You could say that. Went out with my crew to check some ruins and got jumped by skel’tons. I was the only one that made it out.”

The innkeeper’s eyes widened and he blew a silent whistle. “That’s rough, lad. Sympathies. Tell you what. That one there is on the house. To toast your friends.”

Kon smiled gratefully. “Thanks mister. Now all I need is to find some new folks to crew with.”

The innkeeper nodded, then looked thoughtful for a moment, “You have a sword at your belt. Is that your trade?” Kon nodded. “And you fought undead and lived?”

Another nod. “And kobolds and snakes.”

The innkeeper nodded again. “Well then, we may both be in luck.”

“Why’s that?” asked Kon.

“There was a group saying they needed more muscle.”

“That’s great.” Kon said. “But… why is that good luck for you?”

“Because I get a finder’s fee for introducing you!” he replied with a grin.
